About an hour ago, I finished reading a book. The last chapter was all about slowing down and taking time to breathe in our surroundings. Stop. Notice something new and let it affect you. It also discussed Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and how proficiency is something foreign to beginners. Even Macklemore & Ryan Lewis recognize that building up a trade or skill takes time – “the greats weren’t great because they could paint. The greats were great because they paint a lot” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNX-g8TMyyY). Great song.
The idea is that it takes 10,000 hours to master something. Similarly, change does not manifest itself overnight. It isn’t something you can decide to implement, close your eyes, and wake up and everything is different. Change takes time and that’s okay. One thing to note is that you can’t change the world without changing your outlook on the world. That can mean something different to every person which is really cool – it begins in the heart and works its way outward.
To quote my book, “Be encouraged. Change is slow, but it does take place. Be confident that this is the beginning…” There will always be something you will be inclined to work towards or change within yourself, but rather than viewing it as a formidable undertaking, I encourage you to view it as an exciting adventure. We don’t know what the future holds, but one thing we can control is our inward attitudes and how we react to things. Gandhi was a big proponent of this. Once you recognize the sovereignty within yourself to determine how you view yourself especially in a tough situation, you are free to feel liberation as you enter into this new story.
Rather than allow worrying to affect your present and future endeavors, trust in the fact that change is slow. It is incremental. It is life-giving and it opens you up to a world of growth and learning. Before undergoing change in yourself and for others, rest and reflect on your own heart and intentions behind it. Breathe in and be still. Allow yourself the freedom to see the adventure that is change and enter into it with excitement and confidence! It will be life-changing.
